THOMPSON TO DOHMH: OBEY THE LAW, PROVIDE ANIMAL SHELTERS |
|
New York City Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr. today issued the following statement following an article in the Daily News noting the lack of animal shelters in the Bronx and Queens although Local Law 12 requires that the City acquire and complete construction of full-service animal shelters in the Bronx and Queens by July 1, 2006:
“In my June 2006 audit of Animal Care and Control, I noted that the Bronx and Queens did not have full service animal shelters. Instead, the boroughs had receiving-only centers with limited hours as the Daily News reports.
As part of the audit, my office was informed that the City may have identified sites in Queens for a full service shelter but that the deadline would not be met.
At the time, I recommended that the receiving-only facilities in the Bronx and Queens provide adoption services to people who come in until its full service facilities are up and running. However, I’m troubled that my recommendation was not adopted and believe the City should pursue this course.”
