COMPTROLLER THOMPSON STATEMENT ON PROPOSITION 8 RULING

New York City Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr. today issued the following statement after the California Supreme Court upheld Proposition 8:

“I am disappointed that the California Supreme Court has ruled to uphold Proposition 8 and allow a ban on marriage of same-sex couples to stand. Same-sex couples in committed relationships deserve to benefit from the same rights and legal protections as heterosexual couples. While I am pleased that the Court has validated the marriages of 18,000 same-sex couples who are already married, today’s overall decision represents a profound loss of basic rights.

I am hopeful that New York State’s legislators will instead follow the path set by other states - Vermont, Maine, Iowa, Connecticut and Massachusetts – to open the doors to change so that all New Yorkers can feel free to live and love as they wish.”
