THOMPSON STATEMENT ON NYS DEPT. OF LABOR ANNOUNCEMENT OF APRIL UNEMPLOYMENT RATE FOR NYC
New York City Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr. issued the following statement regarding the April job-loss numbers released today by the New York State Department of Labor showing that the month-over-month unemployment rate fell to 8.0% from 8.1% last month on a seasonally-adjusted basis:
“Today’s report is favorable news for New York City and we should be encouraged that we saw a decrease, although small, in the unemployment rate from last month. While New Yorkers continue to struggle with this recession, there is a glimmer of hope in the fact that our City gained a small number of jobs in April, which places New York in a far better position than the rest of the nation. We will keep monitoring the situation closely and I remain hopeful that the infusion of federal stimulus funds, coupled with the inherent resiliency of New Yorkers, will help place our City on the path to economic recovery.”
