THOMPSON STATEMENT ON NYS DEPARTMENT OF LABOR
ANNOUNCEMENT OF MARCH JOB-LOSS NUMBERS

New York City Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr. issued the following statement regarding the March job-loss numbers released today by the New York State Department of Labor showing that more than 86,000 jobs have been lost in NYC since last March and the month-over-month unemployment rate remained at 8.1% on a seasonally-adjusted basis:

“Today we once again find ourselves confronted with the harsh reality that tens of thousands of New Yorkers have lost their jobs, many of whom are our friends, family, and neighbors.  While the City unemployment rate remained the same, it is still at a level not seen in more than five years. This recession has taken an incredible toll on those who are now struggling to find work and unfortunately I anticipate this pattern to continue for a few more months.  However, I remain hopeful that the infusion of Federal Stimulus Funds into our economy will help to stabilize our job market and place us on our way to recovery.”
