New York City Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr. speaks at the seventh annual memorial Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire ceremony on March 27, 2009. |
New York City Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr. issued the following statement today after attending the annual Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire commemoration at the corner of Washington Place and Greene Street in Manhattan:
The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire nearly a century ago opened the eyes of our City and our nation to criminal labor practices and unsafe working conditions that were sadly so common in the early part of the last century. Today, workers still face many obstacles, which is why the Employee Free Choice Act is so important. If the majority of employees sign up to form a union, they should have the right to have union representation. As we remember the 146 people who passed away on that sad day, let us also look ahead and fight for workers’ rights, support our middle class, and strengthen our City.
