New York City Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr. issued the following statement at the Support Israel Rally in Manhattan yesterday:
“In light of the recent hostilities in the Middle East, I once again express my strong support for Israel in its conflict with Hamas militants in Gaza. For years, Israel has endured persistent air attacks on southern towns like Sderot. In the wake of Hamas’ recent decision to end the six-month cease-fire and renew its hostilities toward Israel, the Israeli government has no choice but to defend itself and bring an end to this violent threat.
It is my hope that in the wake of Israel’s defensive actions, Hamas will agree to permanently suspend its violent aggression and to disavow its commitment to Israel's destruction. Looking to the future, it is my further hope that the government of Israel and responsible Palestinian leaders can arrive at a peaceful solution that protects the lives and the property of both Israelis and Palestinians in the region.
At a time when some leaders in the Middle East have replaced dialogue with demagoguery, we must remain firm in our support for an enduring peace and a secure Israel.”
