New York City Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr. today hosted the first clinic of his second series of “Save our Homes” foreclosure intervention clinics. At today’s clinic in the Bronx, Thompson facilitated one-on-one interactions between distressed homeowners and their respective lenders in order to help prevent foreclosure.
At his foreclosure prevention clinic held at the Bronx Museum of the Arts, Thompson said: “We hear about the Wall Street firms that need help. We hear about the banks that need help. We hear about the car companies that need help. But, let’s not forget about the families who need help because they find themselves struggling to pay their mortgage.”
He continued: “From Jamaica, Queens to Stapleton in Staten Island, from Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn to right here in the Bronx, the foreclosure crisis has touched New Yorkers from all walks of life in every corner of the city. My office is here to help.”
In April 2007, Thompson launched a Foreclosure Prevention Helpline – (212) 669-4600 – to assist New Yorkers struggling to overcome burdensome mortgage payments and the possibility of foreclosure. Since its launch, Thompson’s Helpline has received more than 4,600 calls.
Last year, Thompson held an initial series of foreclosure intervention clinics in four of the five boroughs. On November 15, 2008, when Thompson held his first Bronx “Save our Homes” clinic, 186 cases were opened.
As economic conditions worsen and foreclosures continue to rise, Thompson will host additional clinics in the other boroughs to ensure more opportunities for New Yorkers to get information and hold onto their homes. The next clinic will be held in Queens on May 30th.
