THOMPSON STATEMENT ON BED-STUY GATEWAY BID
|
New York City Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr. today announced his support for the creation of a new Business Improvement District (BID) for Bedford Stuyvesant in central Brooklyn. The new Gateway BID will include properties along Fulton Street between Classon and Troy Avenues and along Nostrand Avenue between Halsey Street and Atlantic Avenue.
“This area has the borough’s second heaviest pedestrian traffic after Fulton Street in Downtown Brooklyn,” Thompson said. “I applaud the efforts of the Fulton-Nostrand United Merchants Association and the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation, as they have worked closely with the City’s Department of Small Business Services to develop this new BID.”
As Comptroller, Thompson serves as an ex officio member of the Board of Directors on all BIDs. In December 2008, Thompson wrote to Council Member David Weprin, Chair of the City Council Finance Committee, to voice his support for legislation to create this new bid. The City Council will vote tomorrow on the legislation, Intro 906.
“BIDs are especially valuable in these challenging economic times,” Thompson said. “We need more effective public-private partnerships that develop new and innovative programs to support local business and help them to stay afloat. BIDs have a proven track record of success in a broad range of communities across our city. I am certain that Gateway BID will work effectively and efficiently to improve the quality of life for property owners, merchants and residents in the Bed-Stuy area.”
