New York City Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr. joined with Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum, City Council Members Bill de Blasio, John Liu, and Eric Gioia, and hunger advocates today to call on Mayor Bloomberg to institute a change to the city’s food stamp program enabling able-bodied adults without dependants to receive the benefit for an extended period during this recession.
“Mayor Bloomberg has once again shown he does not understand the pain being felt by New Yorkers during this fiscal crisis,” Thompson said. “As we see jobs lost by the tens of thousands and more New Yorkers struggling to make ends meet, the Mayor refuses to grant our most vulnerable the opportunity to put food on the table.”
Thompson joined his colleagues at a rally on the steps of City Hall to demand that the Mayor institute a program extension, as included in the federal stimulus bill recently signed by President Obama, to the city’s food stamp program.
“Each dollar in food stamps creates one dollar seventy cents of financial activity. The longer the Mayor waits to implement this extension, the longer our neighborhood grocers, bodegas and businesses will suffer,” Thompson said.
