New York City Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr. speaks at a City Hall news conference on November 3, 2008 after Mayor Michael Bloomberg signed into law a measure to allow City elected officials to seek a third term. Thompson stated, “Mayor Bloomberg decided that he knew better than the people of New York City. By signing into law a term-limits extension that fulfills his own ambitions, he has done an end-run around the people of this city and told New Yorkers that their votes do not count.”

New York City Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr. today issued the following statement after Mayor Michael Bloomberg signed into law a measure to allow City elected officials to seek a third term:

Today, Mayor Bloomberg decided that he knew better than the people of New York City.  By signing into law a term-limits extension that fulfills his own ambitions, he has done an end-run around the people of this city and told New Yorkers that their votes do not count.

Although the Mayor hopes to end this troubling episode with his signature, New Yorkers will never forget. Our will and our votes have been overturned. Democracy has been suspended. New York City does not belong to any one individual, or a handful of elected officials. It belongs to the people, and today the people have been ignored.
