THOMPSON STATEMENT ON CALIFORNIA COURT RULING

New York City Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr. today issued the following statement concerning the California Supreme Court’s ruling that same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry:

I applaud the California Supreme Court for recognizing that marriage of same-sex couples is a fundamental right in this country. As a longtime supporter of marriage for same-sex couples, our nation, our state and our city must aspire to the principles of equality and inclusivity, and not yield to bigotry and division. Same-sex couples in committed relationships merit the same rights and legal protections as heterosexual couples.

Here in New York State, I am proud that we have a Governor who has expressed strong support for legalizing same-sex marriage. I am hopeful that our legislators, both locally and across the state, will view this ruling as a victory that reflects a time where equality must be achieved for all.
