New York City Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr. today issued the following statement about Governor Spitzer’s 2008 State Budget Address:
As we move ahead in these uncertain fiscal times I applaud the governor for putting forth a budget that embraces fiscal prudence and yet preserves future priorities.
In particular, I am very supportive of the governor’s proposals to tie spending increases to the rate of personal income growth, reform Medicaid reimbursements to more accurately reflect current costs and promote primary care, and increase the income limit for Child Health Plus.
As a strong champion of our public university system, and a vocal advocate for expanding the role of our community colleges in workforce development, I was also pleased with the governor’s proposals to make our public universities more competitive.
On the other hand, I am disappointed that New York City is not set to receive as much education aid as originally expected.
