New York City Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr. and New York City Councilman James Vacca visited senior centers in the Throgs Neck Section of the Bronx on May 19th to discuss issues affecting the senior community, stressing the need to resist any efforts to restructure senior centers and services without sufficient community input.

“I will continue to fight for the rights of our senior citizens,” Thompson said during the visits to the North East Bronx Senior Citizens Center and the JASA Throgs Neck Senior Citizens Center. “Any restructuring of services provided to our seniors cannot move ahead without first listening to the voices of those who will be most affected. You are the generation that built this City into what it is today. You have more than earned the right to be heard.”

In recent months, Thompson has strongly advocated against hasty changes in the City’s delivery of services to senior citizens. Thompson twice stood on the steps of City Hall with hundreds of seniors to rally against a proposed restructuring of senior centers and services by the Department for the Aging. During the visit, he urged seniors to call 311 and voice their opinions. You can read more about the Comptroller's concerns at www.comptroller.nyc.gov.

“The senior population is expected to increase 44% by the year 2030, so we must act now to provide better services and additional programs, not the other way around,” Thompson said.
