THOMPSON STATEMENT ON BROOKLYN SHOOTING

New York City Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr. issued the following statement on the fatal police shooting of Khiel Coppin in Brooklyn on Monday:

I have complete confidence that the District Attorney’s Office will conduct a thorough and reasoned investigation. We must look beyond the unfortunate circumstances that led to the death of Khiel Coppin and mourn the loss of a son and a sibling, a teenager who may have needed more help than was available. We as a city need to take a hard look at the delivery and accessibility of mental health services to make sure that proper treatment is provided when necessary. I offer my sincerest condolences to Khiel Coppin’s family. Again, I am appealing for reason and calm, and for the District Attorney to ensure that this investigation is swiftly handled so that all of us can truly understand what led to Kheil Coppin’s death.
