THOMPSON STATEMENT ON COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY INCIDENT

New York City Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr. issued the following statement concerning an incident in which a professor at Columbia University’s Teachers College found a hangman’s noose outside her office door:

“I was outraged to hear that Madonna Constantine, a Professor at the Teachers College of Columbia University, found a noose hanging outside her office as she arrived for work on Tuesday morning.  This act, as well as the recent nationwide resurgence of incidents involving racist symbols, is deplorable and unacceptable.  We as a society are better than this.  As New Yorkers, respect and appreciation for ethnic and cultural differences have long been values that we cherish. I am confident that the New York City Police Department will expeditiously and thoroughly investigate this case to deliver justice to Professor Constantine, our communities and our city.”
