THOMPSON STATEMENT ON COMPLAINT AGAINST DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

New York City Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr. today issued the following statement about an Equal Employment Opportunity complaint filed today against the New York City Department of Education alleging under-representation of Latinos in the Department’s Office of Parent Engagement:

“I am extremely troubled by the allegations concerning the lack of representation of Latinos in the decision-making ranks of the Department of Education’s Office of Family Engagement and Advocacy. It appears that the Department is turning a blind eye to the needs of the 40 percent of schoolchildren who are Latino in our city schools. It is simply a shame that, as it undergoes yet another restructuring, the Department has seemingly ignored the growing presence and needs of the Latino community.”
