STATEMENT BY COMPTROLLER THOMPSON ON PROPOSED IMMIGRATION MEASURE

New York City Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr. today issued the following statement concerning the proposed changes to federal immigration law:

“It is more important than ever that Congress enact progressive immigration reform. The growth and success of the immigrant community in New York City reflects our City’s traditional role as a beacon for those seeking opportunity and freedom. We must ensure that hard-working immigrants achieve legal status through a path to citizenship that should not be regarded as a threat to our Nation but in keeping with a tradition that has nurtured us and made us great. Since the City’s earliest days, immigrants have played an important role in our economic, civic, and cultural life and have helped to build this City.”
