New York City Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr. addressed hundreds of high school juniors and seniors interested in joining the Edward J. Malloy Initiative for Construction Skills program on May 15, 2007.
“I strongly encourage all of you to consider a career in the building and construction trades. Not only are these good paying jobs, they also play an important role in the development of New York,” Comptroller Thompson said. “Quite simply, the trades provide an opportunity for workers to shape both their own futures and our City’s future.
Today, the building and construction trades are as valuable as they ever were, if not more so, and a firm commitment to training the workforce of tomorrow is not only necessary to the health of the industry, but also to its heart.”
Since 2001, the Edward J. Malloy Initiative for Construction Skills, formerly known as Construction Skills 2000, has built a record of success in preparing New York City public high school students for careers in the building and construction trades.
Following recommendations of the Mayor’s Commission on Construction Opportunity, the program has expanded its mission to serve public high school students and adults, including residents of the New York City Housing Authority. The program serves students and adults from all corners of the city who want to acquire skills for a long-term career in the building and construction industry.
