COMPTROLLER THOMPSON CALLS FOR END TO STATE CLOTHING SALES TAX

View Council Member David Weprin's release

Comptroller William C. Thompson Jr. today issued the following statement calling for an end to the New York State tax on clothing and footwear purchases under $110. Thompson issued the statement at a news conference with City Council Member David I. Weprin, the Chair of the Council's Finance Committee, at City Hall on Sunday, January 29.

The New York State Clothing Sales Tax needs to be abolished so that struggling families have a better shot at making ends meet. Governor Pataki has broken his promise to eliminate the tax, adding insult to injury to the hardworking low-, moderate- and middle-income families who need relief."
