Carver Federal Savings Bank to Expand Services with Financial Literacy Center in Northern Harlem
View NYS Banking Department release
Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr. and the New York State Banking Department designated the state’s 18 th Banking Development District (BDD) in Manhattan Community Districts 9, 10 and 12 in Northern Harlem. This designation will help Carver Federal Savings Bank expand its services and enhance access to financial services in Bradhurst, while also promoting financial education, investment, economic growth and job creation in northern Manhattan.
“I am pleased at the growing rate of Banking Development Districts throughout the City and that Carver Bank in the Bradhurst Court section of Harlem is the newest addition to New York City communities that will benefit from increased banking services and financial programs,” Thompson said. “This designation will go a long way towards promoting community and economic development for residents.”
To receive a BDD designation, the locality, acting jointly with interested financial institutions, must demonstrate to the Banking Department a need for banking services in a given area. A local government must first vote to approve the submission of a BDD application, which is then forwarded to the Department for approval. The local government must apply in conjunction with a commercial bank, trust company or savings bank, or a state or federally chartered savings bank or savings and loan association.
