New York City Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr. announced that Jeffrey Elmer will serve as Assistant Comptroller for Labor Law effective today.
“It is with great pleasure that I welcome Mr. Elmer to the Comptroller’s Office,” Thompson said. “Mr. Elmer brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this position. His strong background in government and community relations and his work on behalf of various unions and civic groups will make him a tremendous asset to this office.”
In his new position, Elmer will enforce the City and State’s labor laws to ensure that private sector contractors engaged in public work projects pay the prevailing wage to employees. Elmer will additionally work to recover money for workers that are not paid the appropriate wages.
“This position presents an incredible opportunity for me to use my experience in the public and private sector to ensure that workers engaged in City projects are appropriately compensated,” Elmer said. “Enforcing the prevailing wage law is critical to keeping the playing field level for competitive bidding on city construction projects. I am excited to join the Comptroller’s team.”
Prior to this position, Elmer served as Deputy Director of Government Relations for the General Contractors Association of New York for seven years. A lifetime New Yorker, Elmer previously worked as a Community Affairs Manager for BFI Waste Services of New York; Director of Commercial Recycling at the New York City Department of Sanitation; Project Development Coordinator for the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development; and Chapter Director of Washington, DC and Pittsburgh, PA, for Associations of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN).
