New York City Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr., on behalf of New York City’s five pension funds, is urging Dillard’s, Inc. to adopt workplace human rights policies at its shareholder meeting Saturday.
The New York City Employees’ Retirement System, Teachers’ Retirement System, New York City Police Pension Fund, New York City Fire Department Pension Fund and Board of Education Retirement System filed a shareholder proposal with Dillard’s this year. The resolution asks Dillard’s to adopt workplace rights including: banning child labor; allowing all workers to form and join trade unions and bargain collectively; prohibiting discrimination of worker representatives; barring discrimination or intimidation in employment; and, not using forced labor, including bonded or prison labor.
“Sweatshop conditions at supplier factories are a persistent challenge for apparel manufacturers and retailers,” Thompson said. “Much of the industry has begun to recognize the critical importance of managing human rights risks through supply chain transparency. We want to bring Dillard’s up to speed.”
