New York City Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr. honored six
individuals for their contributions to the life of New York City
during his 2003 Asian and Pacific Island Heritage Month Celebration
at Surrogate’s Court on June 4th.
“From the earliest days of this City, immigrants from Asia
and the Pacific Islands came to New York seeking opportunity and
a new way of life,” Thompson said in addressing the crowd
of more than 250 people. “They helped make this City what
it is today, by the sweat of their brow, the power of their ideas,
and the strength of their leadership.”
“We are celebrating this legacy, and we are honoring those
who are continuing the tradition of making dreams come true for
themselves, their families and their communities. Every year, New
Yorkers of Asian and Pacific heritage break down new barriers, playing
increasingly prominent roles in all professions, branches of government,
and civic life.”
Thompson called the honorees “a diverse group of leaders
who have achieved great professional heights.” Julie Danao,
a Broadway actor and singer, performed. The honorees were:
• Cindy Hsu, Anchor, CBS 2 News This Morning and News at
Noon, and Former President, Asian American Journalists Association,
New York Chapter
• Ruby Takanishi, President, Foundation for Child Development
