New York City Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr.
recognized seven women for their accomplishments during his 2003
Women’s History Month Celebration in the City Council Chamber
at City Hall on Monday, March 10.
In his remarks to the crowd of more than 300 guests, Thompson praised
the honorees calling them modern-day heroes.
“These women have achieved great heights professionally,
and opened doors for other women,” the Comptroller said. “They
are role models, for the next generation, and for all of us. They
are leaders who have persevered in their chosen fields and set new
standards for excellence. They are business leaders, educators,
athletes, journalists, and community leaders. They are all achievers
who have made a difference.”
Comptroller Thompson presented awards to Jacqueline Huey, President,
Asian Americans for Equality; Dr. Lorraine Monroe, President and
CEO, The Lorraine Monroe Leadership Institute; Lynn San Andres,
President, National Association of Women Business Owners, New York
City Chapter; Cheryl Washington, Feature Reporter, FOX-5 News; Shahara
Ahmad-Llewellyn, Commissioner, New York City Commission on Women’s
Issues; and Daisy Exposito-Ulla, Chairman and CEO, The Bravo Group.
The night culminated in Comptroller Thompson presenting an award
to Teresa Weatherspoon, Point Guard on the New York Liberty. Calling
her a “living legend of women’s professional basketball,”
Mr. Thompson commended Ms. Weatherspoon’s on- and- off-court
accomplishments, stating that she had “paved a promising future
for women in professional sports, serving as a positive role model
for young people, and encouraging all of us to reach for our dreams.”
