Environmental Protection

New York City's five top environmental challenges are:

  • guaranteeing public health in a cost efficient manner by ensuring the long term protection of its irreplaceable water supply system;

  • implementing an efficient and effective solid waste management program.

  • imbalances in environmental equity and protection from hazardous materials;

  • insufficient progress in developing transportation measures that will have a positive effect on air quality and public health;

  • an antiquated approach to environmental protection that separates air, water, hazardous materials conditions and land use plans. This must be changed to better protect the environment and public health and to foster sustainable local development.

Protecting New York City's water supply requires vigilance to ensure that the promises made in the 1997 Memorandum of Agreement -- signed by the federal, state and city governments as well as a host of watershed communities -- are kept. We have conducted several engineering and program audits of watershed activities.
